Pawsome Wildlife to Spot on a UK Hike

The UK is home to some of the most amazing and diverse wildlife on the planet, and hiking is a great way to get up close and personal with some of these magnificent creatures. Here are a few of the wild animals you may encounter on your next hike.

The Awesome Red Deer

Red deer, the largest native mammal in the UK, are commonly found in Scotland and the Lake District. They are known for their distinctive roar, which can be heard echoing through the forests during the rutting season (autumn). You’ll have the best chance of seeing these majestic animals at dawn or dusk, when they come out to forage for food. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready, as you never know when a stag may suddenly appear on the horizon.

The Mischievous Red Squirrel

Red squirrels are a common sight in many of the UK’s wooded areas, including the New Forest and Snowdonia. These cute critters are notorious for their acrobatics, as they scamper up and down trees, leap from branch to branch, and scamper across telephone lines. Keep your eyes peeled and you’re sure to spot one of these cheeky creatures. They’re especially active in the early morning and late afternoon, so be sure to take a break from your hike and sit quietly for a while to see if any squirrels come out to play.

The Majestic Golden Eagle

Golden Eagles are a rare but awe-inspiring sight in the UK, particularly in Scotland and the Isle of Skye. These magnificent birds of prey are known for their powerful and graceful flight, and their keen eyesight that allows them to spot prey from great distances. They are most commonly seen soaring overhead or perched on a rocky outcropping, keeping a watchful eye on their territory. If you’re lucky enough to spot a Golden Eagle on your hike, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of these amazing birds and the wild landscapes they call home.
